Shirland adjoins Higham and is a later creation, following the line of the A61 and is the centre of the modern parish.

It has a large 15th century church, cemetery, school – currently being rebuilt on a new site, village hall, golf club, a few shops and several pubs.  For what is primarily a ribbon development and despite the constant flow of traffic on the A61 it is attractive and, whilst not as wealthy as Higham, having two social housing estates, it is less disadvantaged than the other two sister villages.
